It’s a big day for fans of Pretty Lights, as the producer himself Derek Vincent Smith has released a new single and music video “Rainbows & Waterfalls.” Marking the first release since 2016’s “Only Yesterday”, the track blends the smooth sounds of Shuggie Otis‘ 1971 classic “Strawberry 23” with his own signature next generation style that defies categorization. The official music video for “Rainbows & Waterfalls” surrounds a theme for LETTER 22, “a story of the positivity that underscores all movement towards progress and enlightenment, no matter how many obstacles stand in the way.”According to Pretty Lights, “It is the story of a pure force of will, hidden somewhere out there, that is dedicated to revealing evolutionary truths to this universe in a systematic way. It is the story of a visitor from another place, charged with delivering an enigmatic message; a wandering guardian, protecting a civilization that rejects the sun; and a being watching over it all, orchestrating its rhythms. LETTER 22 is also the story of all of us, who have each, at one time or another, felt ourselves to be in possession of knowledge or insight that appears an innate, universal truth to us, but is callously dismissed by others. In such moments, it is easy to feel as though you truly are from a different planet, governed by a different sense of logic and order than this one, which used to feel so familiar. However, in such moments we also find ourselves at a crossroads – a point in spacetime where we must choose to either succumb to these tribulations, or overcome them, and let those triumphs fuel the continued search for others who are also willing to open their eyes to another point of view.” Watch “Rainbows & Waterfalls” below:To celebrate his new solo effort, Pretty Lights has also announced a run of dates with the Pretty Lights Live project. On December 28 & 29, Pretty Lights Live will play The Fillmore in Detroit, Michigan with Too Many Zoos and SoDown. On December 30, they will move on to Snowta in Minneapolis, MN, and will conclude 2017 and ring in 2018 at The Fillmore in Philadelphia, PA with Jade Circada.Smith may have a well-deserved reputation for innovation in the studio, but his fresh approach to music has always been equally potent on stage. With the Pretty Lights Live project, he’s found a way to turn his electronic music shows into fully improvisational experiences like no other. It’s a unique vision that he brings to life with the help of Alvin Ford Jr. (drums), Chris Karns (turntables), Borahm Lee (keys) and Brandon Butler (keys) — a stellar group of musicians who have backed him in concert since the summer of 2016. Taking cues from early jazz musicians, Smith and his band make sure every performance is a unique adventure by injecting a healthy dose of improv into the equation. No song ever sounds the same twice.[PRETTY LIGHTS LIVE NEW YEAR’S RUN]December 28: Detroit, MI – The Fillmore (w/ Too Many Zooz)December 29: Detroit, MI – The Fillmore (w/ SoDown)December 30: Minneapolis, MN – SnowtaDecember 31: Philadelphia, PA – The Fillmore (w/ Jade Cicada)* 2 Day Passes Available in DetroitTickets, VIP Experiences, and lodging options (via CID Entertainment and Curadora) for 12/28-29 in Detroit and 12/31 in Philadelphia will be available via Pretty Lights’ direct-to-fan pre-sale.
