Locals hit by new phone scam

By on January 12, 2020

first_imgSeveral local residents have received calls from a person claiming to be from the “Window’s Centre” and that they have discovered problems with a computer the victim owns.  The fraudster then has the victim log onto the computer and walks them through several steps that allow the fraudster remote access to the computer.  RCMP believe the fraudster then installs a virus or obtains person information about the victim. The fraudster then asks for $100 to renew a warrant or for a new warranty as the problem was not covered.  They state if the fee isn’t paid, the computer will crash within 48 hours.  The fraudster suggested that payment could be made through cheque or money order. In one case the victim did hang up on the fraudster and then received a second call and the person said “when it crashes don’t call us.”- Advertisement – The Dawson Creek RCMP warn residents that if you receive an unsolicited call from a computer firm, be highly suspicious.  If someone asks for money or says that they have money for you and asks for personal information, don’t give them any information.
