FRISCO, Texas – Nicholls’ Oleksandr Podgursky and Southeastern Louisiana’s Putri Insani are the Southland Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Players of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. Southland Conference Players of the Week are presented by MidSouth Bank. Podgursky led the Colonels to a perfect 2-0 weekend by winning both of his No. 1 singles matches and picking up a top-line doubles victory. Nicholls edged UTRGV 4-3 on Friday and defeated Alcorn State 6-1 on Saturday. The Colonels (4-7) host New Mexico State this afternoon before heading to Abilene Christian for their Southland Conference opener at 2 p.m. CT Friday. Nicholls wraps up the weekend roadtrip against Incarnate Word at 11 a.m. Sunday. Women’s Tennis Player of the Week – Putri Insani, Southeastern Louisiana – Freshman – Jakarta, IndonesiaInsani moved to 4-1 in Southland Conference singles action with straight-set wins over UIW’s Jelena Dordan and A&M-Corpus Christi’s Carolina Bulatovic. Insani and partner Ximena Yanez remained perfect in doubles play as a 7-1 tiebreaker pushed the duo to a 7-6 win against the Islanders. Southeastern Louisiana (5-8, 2-3 SLC) continues league play on the road against Central Arkansas at 1 p.m. Friday, followed by an 11 a.m. match against Northwestern State on Sunday. Honorable Mention: Axel Vila Antuna, Lamar. Victorious in four of her last five singles matches, Insani continued to dominate at the No. 1 position as a freshman. She picked up a pair of straight-set wins as the Lions split their weekend matches with a 6-1 win over Incarnate Word and a 5-2 loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Men’s Tennis Player of the Week – Oleksandr Podgursky, Nicholls – Senior – Simferopol, UkrainePodgursky downed UTRGV’s Samuel de Felipe Garcia in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, on Friday. After dropping the second set to Alcorn’s Gjorgji Popovski, Podgursky bounced back to take the final set 6-1 to improve to 3-1 in his last four singles contests. He finished the week off with a 6-3 doubles victory over Alcorn alongside partner Tobias Lentz.
